The YWCA is an organization that provides activities for women. In the early years many YWCA buildings also provided rooms for single women to rent. The YWCA in Zanesville was no exception, but the building that housed the organization from 1926 to 1993 is definitely an exception. This beautiful brick building with large welcoming doors and three wings situated on North Sixth Street in Zanesville, Ohio, was entered in the National Registry of Historic Places in 1978.
In 1925, when 30 teams were soliciting money from the community to reach their building goal of $165,000, none could have known how many people in the next 70 years would enter through those doors, walk the black and green mosaic tile floors, dance with friends in the ballroom, climb the lovely stairway to their room, or attend one of many service club meetings that were regularly held there.
Nor could they have known how many lives would be touched or changed by one of the many services provided at this facility over the years. There have been Ifka dances, Teen Tyme, Exercise Classes, Yoga, Dog Obedience, Day Care, Line Dancing, Ballroom Dancing, Weight Lifting, Gymnastics, Style Shows, not to mention the many club meetings, lunches, receptions and dinners; and many young women have called it ‘home” for short or long periods of time. The YWCA organization left this building in 1993 and today, under new ownership, Bryan Place is home to a restaurant, several service clubs, wedding receptions, dances, residents and possibly a bed and breakfast in the future.
This lovely historical building continues to be alive with events that will be the memories of tomorrow, as it has provided so many with memories of days gone by.
